Room Divider Ideas

Decorative creativity can be difficult for some people. When it comes to room dividers there are hundreds of options available, its often just a matter of picking the one that's right for you.

Of course standard options are available, such as those you can buy from retailers such as Target or Ikea, but what if you want to make your own and do something unique? You've come to the right place. Here's a list of possibilities you can consider.

  • Use a row of potted plants, tall, short or a mix of both, to separate areas of a room.
  • Often a room can be divided simply with a piece of furniture like a couch or a long table.
  • Hang small toys from sturdy wires from the ceiling. If done correctly you could change out the toys seasonally.
  • Build a hinged room divider out of old doors or windows.
  • Use a freestanding bookcase as a divider.
  • Setup a large chalkboard or whiteboard between two areas of a kids room to define the space.
  • Use an old potting bench with small plants sitting on it.
  • Use an old trellis. This is a good one because you can wind decorative flowers through it.
  • For a college dorm use a shared CD rack or bookshelf to split the space. Or consider a row of beanbags or other soft furniture.
  • In our bathroom we have hung a kingsize bedsheet from the ceiling to wall off an area we use for storage. A bookshelf sits in the middle with the sheet wraping behind it so we can still have storage space along that "wall."
  • hang beads from the ceiling like the 70's style dividers
  • Get a double sided electric fireplace. It's a great way to add warmth and enjoyment while defining the seperate spaces.
  • floor to ceiling bookshelves with an opening to walk through. This is great for small apartments that need to define living spaces.
  • the divider doesn't have to be vertical. You can define different spaces using braided area rugs. Longer rugs are better at this as you can cover a wider area.

Hopefully this list will get your creative juices flowing. You can shop for predone dividers at places like Amazon. One of the more popular ones is a standard 4 panel divider with an Asian theme. Read more / buy online here
